Overspent On Black Friday? Here’s How to Fix It

Another year has almost come to an end, and we are back at Black Friday. Although it is one of the most profitable times of the year for businesses, it is also one of the most detrimental to a person’s budget. We tend to get some great deals, but there is also a fine line between getting a good deal and being a bit greedy. By the time you are reading this, you are likely almost done or are done with your shopping, where do you stand with your spending for the day and the season? After the festivities and the reality of it all hits you, keep in mind the following items.

1) Consider Buying Online

If you have not finished shopping, consider finishing by ordering online. Remember, your brain is going to be hijacked by the things you see in the stores along with what you see other people buying. When you have a clear mind, you can order the items you want online without the bombardment of random things from the store. You can quickly get what you need and checkout without waiting in long lines. Ultimately, it is a win-win! It can also save you money.

2) Double Check Your Budget And The Money You Spent

Spending money on Black Friday is quite simple, especially when everything seems to be on sale. Combined with a full belly of food from a feast the day before and sleep depravity, judgment can be skewed. Although it would be great to keep track of everything WHILE you are spending, but this may not be practical for everyone. To ensure you are not going to be in a bind a month from now, debrief when you finally stop shopping. Understand how much you have spent and what you might have left still to spend.

3) Be Willing To Take Things Back

Sure, a $700 70″ 4K TV is a nice addition to your home, but is it in your budget? Was it an impulsive buy? Are there other things you might have bought during the madness which you may not have needed that put you over your spending limit? When this reality hits you, be willing to take things back. There is no obligation to keep these items. As long as you have not done anything to void your ability to take them back, return it. Your sanity and stress are well worth you returning the item.

There is nothing inherently wrong with shopping, especially on Black Friday. The only issue is caused by your own lack of spending control. No one else is going to be spending your money on this day. Thus, if you are having trouble with spending, it is ultimately your fault. Be careful, stay safe, and have fun!
