3 Reasons So Many Don’t Talk About Money, And Why You Should

Why are so many of us not inclined to talk about money? Especially when it comes to talking about having enough and managing your current financial situation. It appears our society is much more willing to talk about other taboo topics ahead of money. Why? If you think about it realistically, without money the things you enjoy in this life are much more difficult to have or acquire. Let’s take a look at some key characteristics I have which we fall into and how to counter-act it.

1) Money Is TOO Personal

While it is true, no two people (families count as one) have the same financial outlook and situations. In a world where so much of what we do is tied to how much money we have, it is easy to see why we don’t want to talk about it. If we think we have too little, we might be embarrassed. Perhaps you think you have a lot and you don’t want others to know how much you have out of fear. Regardless of who you are, you can have these conversations about money without getting into the details. We can all learn from each other and our circumstances.

2) Many Struggle With Money

Often when we are in the midst of hardship with money, the  last thing any of us want to do is to talk about it with others. We have catered to a society where it is better to post out to the world the nice things we have instead of any troubles we are dealing with. Thus, we can become embarrassed to show how much we struggle compared to what others are showing to us. The reality is, most are simply putting on a show. The underlying truth with many of us is likely quite similar. It IS okay to share the bad stuff in our lives. After all, we are all human!

3) The Ignorance Of Money

Sure, it is great to make others THINK we know what we are doing with money, but ultimately your understanding will be reflected in your “real” life not your “Instagram” life. Most importantly, you will likely be very open about your finances with others. This is not a way to brag, it is more to understand and learn about how others manage their money. It becomes a switch from being ignorant and fearful to being courageous and knowledge seeking. The more you know, the better equipped you will be. Even if you know absolutely nothing about managing money, start somewhere.

Talking about money should not be taboo. You should want to talk about this topic with others to not only learn but also to teach others.
