Why Dave Ramsey’s Teachings Actually Destroy Lives
Dave Ramsey is a known personal debt “guru” which many follow with the hope to get out of debt. Unfortunately, the things that he teaches are not as great as you would be lead to believe. In many cases they are terrible. However, to his credit, there are many others before him and after him who have taught the same stuff. Thus, it all sucks! Why you may ask? I will tell you!
1) The Instructions
Yes, Dave like many others provides a step by step process to getting you out of debt. There are books, handouts, and videos you can watch in order to learn what this “sure fire” way of getting your money under control. Unfortunately, this is exactly where Dave and many others give their followers the worst part of the deal! They expect the listeners to ACTUALLY listen to what it is they are trying show them. In addition, they provide the guidance for the work YOU have to do in order to start this debt free path. It’s ridiculous! The so-called helpers aren’t doing it all FOR YOU? They expect you to do it.
2) Spending Money
These teachers of the coin instruct their followers to stop spending money they don’t have. Essentially, even though you still have $400 before you max out your credit card available to you, they want you to stop. This sucks because the shoe store has a sale going on right now where you buy 3 pairs and get the 4th one free. It is practically a steal! However, they are very strict on the no-spend thing. In some instances they actually encourage you to cut-up your credit cards. This is sacrilegious, I know, but they say it will be good. I guess you won’t be getting those four pair of shoes you will probably never wear.
3) Paying Off Debt
This is by far the worst one. The guidance from Dave and the others states you are to pay towards your credit cards and other outstanding debts. You heard me correctly. They want you to spend your hard earned money on things you ALREADY technically bought with your many credit cards. This means you are not able to waste it all on crazy nights out or on an impromptu shopping spree. You are supposed to be moving as much as you can to this old stuff you already have in your possession. No excitement. No fun.
As you can clearly see, the things Dave and other gurus alike ask you to do to get out of debt is painfully boring and tedious. It is the pain of missing out on new and exciting things. This is also forcing the followers to take responsibility of their actions and make decisions to eliminate their outstanding debt.
If you haven’t understood the satirical quality to this post yet, let me make it obvious. Dave’s and other’s teachings do not ACTUALLY suck. This was a joke about the followers I have worked with. So many complain or have excuses very similar to what I wrote. It leaves me dumbfounded! Yes, it is going to suck to have to be an adult and do this stuff, but it HAS to be done!?
