Don’t Follow A Financial Teacher Blindly
A financial journey takes time. We all start somewhere once we have finally reached a tipping point of needing to make a change. For some it is figuring it out on our own, while others are heavily influenced by a teacher of sorts. If you are following after someone, be sure to still do your homework and understand what it is they are trying to explain to you. If you don’t you are simply following them blind.
Doing Your Research
Understanding why someone is telling you to do one thing or another is paramount in life. If you are devoted to a person as a learner, wouldn’t it be good to truly know what they are talking about? It can be so easy to simply turn a blind eye to some of the things we are told. A financial guru could tell you to invest all of your money into BitCoin or something similar. The problem is, someĀ followers would do it without hesitation. Regardless of what others tell you to do, or even what I suggest, be sure to question it. Unless it is heaven sent, we are all human and thus all fallable.
Learn To Think For Yourself
There has to come a time in your life that you are able to begin to form your own opinions. You do not always have to agree with me or other finance guys, because we are all different. Myself and others like me are always going to try to lead you in what we think is the best way possible. However, there is also a point where you stop listening to us 100% and learn to think for yourself.
Example:
One example is my truck loan. Dave Ramsey hates loans and he hates buying brand new cars. I however, got a brand new truck with a loan. I do not agree with his sentiment. The reason being is I knew exactly what I was doing, and I had a plan as to why I was doing it. There is another post I made which explains what I did, but just know this was a time when I disagreed with someone who is well-known to be a financial guru. It is situations like this that help you learn and grow for yourself.
It Is Not About Checking The Boxes
Having financial literacy is all I ever hope to provide for you all. I can guide you all day every day on how to get out of debt and make a budget. However, I cannot make you think smarter about money. Sure, I can give you thought provoking topics, but you have to be the one to make the connections for yourself. When I see people posting articles or quotes from different finance people as though they are holy doctrine, I get concerned. These are people who do not know how to think for themselves, but rather allow someone else to do it for them. Be smart with your own money and your own decisions. I will be here to help you along the path, but you have to take the next steps and know where you want this path to go.
