How A New Career Can Provide More Than Just Income

We work for a living to provide for our family and ourselves. The income we are able to make gives us a sense of pride as well as an income. However, things change in our lives which make us desire something more in a career. It can mean more money, more time to ourselves, more freedom, or more opportunities. Regardless of what the cause, change can be good for multiple reasons..

1. More Income

The first item to take note when changing jobs is the most simple. We set out to find the ability to make more money for ourselves. Having more income, does provide more freedom to do more things in life. It also provides a greater sense of security in our finances. However, be mindful not to gravitate to a career move ONLY for more money. Often the other attributes associated with the job are not going to be worth more in your paycheck every month.

2. More Work/Life Balance

Changing jobs can be the result of having too much work or stress in your current position. A new position can mean trading your 65+ hours a week to a standard 40+ hours. This will allow you to have more free time to do other things outside of work like spending time with your family or going on vacations. However, having fewer hours may only mean you are being required to force the same 65+ hours of work into 40+ hours of work. This would certainly NOT be a great move.

3. More Freedom and Opportunities

Jobs provide the opportunity to learn and grow through a company, or at least they should. Many of us find ourselves in a situation where we are bored due to the mundane and boring tasks we are supposed to do day after day. This creates stagnate growth and often leads to a the person hating their jobs. Looking for other jobs options where there is more opportunity is a great option. Another item is found in the bureaucracy of a company. Having the freedom to perform the functions, updates, and run with ideas they have is crucial to some people. If this is squelched by an employer, you can feel as if you have no value. Finding a company where you have new opportunities and freedom can be a huge milestone for your career growth. Make sure you understand what these opportunities are though before agreeing to the position. What a future employer may be telling you, may simply last for a few months before you are back to square one.

Ultimately the choice to make a career change is always going to take a significant amount of thought, meditation, and even prayer. Be sure to understand all of your options, and make the best decision with the information you have available. Just be sure to have a good balance of the information discussed here. There is a strong emphasis on the income item. If you follow the money only, you will never be able to find the type of job you want.
